 Laura Zhang Choi of Warren County, who advocates on behalf of the LBGTQ+ community and is working for the inclusion and representation of people of all ages across the county and beyond. Choi joined the Greenwich Township School District school board and shares her passion for educational equity. She explains how important it is that students see a teacher that looks like them and hear stories that are not generally reflected in their textbooks or in their curriculum. She notes that New Jersey is only the second state to mandate an Asian American history curriculum. She was a strong advocate for its inclusion in her district and fights for LBGTQ+ rights in any way she can. |  Dr. Karen Gaffney is Professor of English at Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey, where she teaches Race in American Literature and Popular Culture. Unitarian Universalists focus on the theme of light and that it symbolizes the increasing daylight hours, often celebrated around the time of the winter solstice, representing hope and renewal in the darkest time of year; it is a way for UUs to mark a time of personal and collective inner light, with rituals and readings that reflect the idea of bringing light into the world.
- Meaning of "Luminescence":
"Luminescence" refers to the emission of light, and in this context, it signifies the positive potential within each individual and the collective power to illuminate the world with kindness and justice. - Focus on Hope and Renewal:
As the days grow longer after the winter solstice, the celebration highlights the promise of new beginnings and the potential for positive change. - Rituals and Activities:
Congregations may incorporate various elements into their celebrations, including lighting candles, sharing stories of personal inspiration, singing songs about light, and reflecting on the principles of Unitarian Universalism. - Not an official UU holiday:
While not officially recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association, some UU congregations have adopted the "Celebration of Luminescence" as a meaningful way to mark the turning of the seasons.
Unitarian Universalism encourages thoughtful exploration. Many UUs transitioned from other faiths after realizing their previous beliefs didn't withstand deeper questioning. Unitarian Universalism is an examined faith. Many UUs came from other faiths because when we looked hard, we found that the old faith didn't hold up to the questions. Here, diversity is cherished as a source of strength, and faith becomes a journey of discovery rather than a fixed destination. Together, Unitarian Universalists create a welcoming space for dialogue, growth, and collective action, embodying a vision of compassion, justice, and interconnectedness.
